Program Overview

Recovery Movie Meet-Ups (RMM) is a structured, evidence-informed recovery and mental-health support program that uses carefully selected films, trained facilitators, and guided discussion to help justice-involved individuals build emotional insight, recovery motivation, and social connection. RMM is a turnkey therapeutic platform designed specifically for recovery, rehabilitation, and behavioral health environments.

Why This Program Works in a Correctional Setting

  • Curated film library focused on addiction, trauma, redemption, accountability, and growth

  • Movies are selected for therapeutic value, not shock or sensationalism or erotic content

  • Each screening is paired with structured discussion prompts and recovery themes

  • Facilitator training ensures consistency, safety, and clinical alignment

  • Fosters human connection in an environment that needs more of it

  • Builds peer-based connection and accountability

  • Encourages emotional expression in a safe, structured format

  • Reduces isolation and improves interpersonal communication

  • Facilitates healthy group interaction without clinical overload

Low Barrier, High Engagement

  • Works with low literacy populations

  • Not dependent on clinical intake or insurance billing

  • Easily integrated into existing programming blocks

  • No stigma attached like “therapy” or “treatment group”

  • High participation compared to lecture-based or worksheet-driven programs

Films Are Not Triggering When Properly Facilitated — They Are Therapeutic

Films become therapeutic tools when:

  • Introduced by trained facilitators

  • Framed with recovery-oriented discussion

  • Processed through guided reflection and peer dialogue

  • Followed by grounding and accountability exercises

Instead of triggering, films:

  • Create emotional access without forcing disclosure

  • Model behavior change through story and consequence

  • Activate empathy and self-reflection safely

  • Normalize struggle while highlighting recovery pathways

  • Allow participants to explore difficult topics indirectly, reducing defensiveness

  • Reinforcing what research already shows

Programs that use narrative, community and creativity inside prisons show measurable success:

Arts and rehabilitation programs consistently demonstrate:

  • Reduced disciplinary incidents

  • Improved emotional regulation

  • Increased cooperation with staff

  • Greater internal motivation for rehabilitation

Comparable programs (theater-based rehabilitation, peer-support recovery communities, SMART Recovery-style group models) have demonstrated:

  • Lower recidivism rates

  • Increased post-release engagement in treatment

  • Better self-reported mental health outcomes

  • Improved communication skills and accountability

Recovery Movie Meet-Ups applies the same principles through film:

  • Identity re-formation through story

  • Community through group engagement

  • Emotional literacy through reflection

  • Accountability through peer discussion
